MLSE: 4 Nations Face-Off Explainer Video
4 Nations face-off explainer
I was asked by MLSE to create an explainer video for the 4 Nations Face-Off games featuring four Toronto Maple Leafs players. They wanted a video that showcased the players in the 4 Nations jerseys, explained how the games worked, and generated excitement for the tournament. This was the first 4 Nations Tournament in 7 years, replacing the usual All-Star Game format. Following their brand guidelines, I made a video that not only explained the upcoming games but also built anticipation. I combined the 4 Nations Face-Off branding with iconic sports entertainment transitions. Using glitch text effects and whip-pan transitions, I aimed for an exciting yet clear video that conveyed all the necessary information for the tournament.
The video got around 200k views on Instagram alone, and helped the tournament reach an impressive audience of over 16 million viewers across North America. The 4 Nations Face-Off Tournament became the second-most watched hockey game in North America. The iconic USA vs Canada game was the most viewed non-NFL event on ESPN+ (and I can’t lie, having Canada win made the project a lot sweeter!)
A draft testing player mockups to find the best way to present the jerseys and create smooth, on-brand transitions.
Working with the MLSE studio team, we worked towards the final video together through storyboarding. They helped provide the endboard and player assets.
